How the day runs, stop by stop
It is a long day built around one big payoff. Roughly ten hours are spent on the coach for about two and a half hours at the lagoon, the beach and the stops in between. The drive itself is scenic, and a good guide turns the road time into the story of the South Coast.
Early Reykjavík pickup
Pickups begin early from listed hotels and bus stops. The coach heads east as the light comes up (or, in deep winter, well before it does).
Seljalandsfoss + a break
A photo stop at Seljalandsfoss, then a short break at Hvolsvöllur. The land turns from farms to black lava the further east you go.
Lunch near Kirkjubæjarklaustur
A lunch stop crossing the vast Eldhraun lava field. Buy food here; it is not in the seat price.
Jökulsárlón + Diamond Beach (~1.5 h)
The lagoon, the drifting icebergs, the seals, the black-sand beach with its stranded ice. Add the boat cruise here in season.
Dinner in Vík, then home
A dinner stop in Vík on the way back, and a late return to Reykjavík. On a clear winter night the drive home can turn up the aurora.
It suits travellers who want the icebergs and the beach without renting a car or driving Route 1, and who can give a whole day to it. It is a poor fit for anyone who dislikes long coach rides, gets carsick easily, or wants only a quick morning out.
